“A couple of years,” she said.

So I’ve spoken this evening with the previously mentioned Dr. Randi Hagerman of the University of California at Davis’ M.I.N.D. Institute. I’d forgotten what a kind and interesting and enthusiastic person she is. Hers is a kind of energy rarely encountered — the drive of someone who spends a life pursuing a thing, who enjoys this pursuit, who can be consumed by something Important. I find in the scientist an enthusiasm for life, and for understanding this world, that I think maybe once earned a person a marbled likeness in the stained-glass alcove of some better, quiet place.

In a ten-minute phone conversation I sat out on my front stoop in the cool California night and had many things connected and confirmed. I see now my next year laid out. I asked her the important questions — do you see Fragile X cured? Do you see a time when the symptoms can be reversed? “It’s a very exciting time,” she said. Things are happening now; new treatments are being studied. I’m getting in at a good time.

When will we start to see things changing? I asked.
