Autism hates freedom.

Hidden deep in Kathleen Sebelius’ op-ed below is a mention of the 2006 Combating Autism Act, which allocated $36 million to research, treatment and “surveillance.” Now this makes me feel special inside for a number of reasons — not least of which is that since it was signed into existence by Bush, who must at that time have been feeling particularly hawkish, the language betrays a peculiarly warlike tone. “Surveillance?” “Combating?” Has the War on Terror extended to autism? Were there plans for a detention camp for suspected quiet kids? Instead of waterboarding, the detainees would be forced to attend cocktail parties.

Seriously, “combating?” Why not the Curing Autism Act or the Fixing Autism Act or the Understanding-With-An-Eye-to-Treating Autism Act? We’re a contentious species to be sure. But then, things haven’t been the same since love became a battlefield.
